Calculate orphan pension
The calculation of an orphan pension depends on whether the claim is lodged:
- on or after 5 April 2010
- before 5 April 2010.

Claim lodged on or after 5 April 2010
First 13 weeks
An orphan child is entitled to a maximum of 95% of the deceased worker’s PIAWE or the current maximum of $2,800 (twice the state average weekly earnings), whichever is the lesser.
From the end of 13 weeks
From the end of the first 13 weeks an orphan pension is paid at the rate of 50% of the deceased worker’s PIAWE or the current maximum of $2,800 (twice the state average weekly earnings), whichever is the lesser, until they cease to be eligible.
Overtime and allowances are not included in the calculation of PIAWE after the first 52 week period.
More than one dependent orphan
If there is more than one dependent orphan they are paid equal amounts of the total pension, subject to eligibility.
Claim lodged before 5 April 2010
First 13 weeks
An orphan child is entitled to a maximum of 95% of the deceased worker’s PIAWE or the current maximum of $2,060 whichever is the lesser.

From the end of 13 weeks
From the end of the first 13 weeks an orphan pension is paid at the rate of 50% of the deceased worker’s PIAWE or the current maximum of $2,060 whichever is the lesser, until they cease to be eligible.
Any overtime and/or shift allowances are not to be included in the calculation of PIAWE after the first 26 week period for claims lodged on or before 5 April 2010.
More than one dependent orphan
If there is more than one dependent orphan they are paid equal amounts of the total pension, subject to eligibility.
